    Mario Kart is an international video game created by the Nintendo studio and adapted for all ages. The idea of designing a board game based on this license was born in 2022 and has become a reality over the months to enter today in the negotiation status with some editors like Ravensburger.

    The game allows you to play as one of the characters from the original game: Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, etc... It is a dynamic racing and combo game in which a three round game does not exceed 30 minutes of play. Its colorful card system and interactive objects based on a system that everyone knows (the one of the video game) allows Mario Kart The boardgame to be very quickly taken in hand by players from 8 years to 70 years. The game is competitive and fast, never forcing players to stop and using a very simple movement system based on color combos between cards and board.

MY WORK

    As a game designer, I had the opportunity to work on the adaptation of the popular Mario Kart franchise into a board game. My goal was to create a game that captured the excitement and fun of the original video game while offering a unique and engaging experience for players.

    To achieve this, I focused on creating a game that combined strategy, luck, and skill. Players would take on the roles of their favorite Mario Kart characters and race around a game board filled with obstacles, power-ups, and challenging terrain. The game would also feature a variety of game modes, including traditional races, time trials, and battle mode.

    In terms of level design, I worked closely with the board artist to create visually stunning game boards that captured the look and feel of the Mario Kart universe. Each board would feature unique challenges and obstacles, ranging from slippery ice patches to treacherous lava pits. Additionally, the use of Events would be strategically managed to give players a chance to gain an advantage or catch up to their opponents.

    Overall, my goal was to create a Mario Kart board game that would appeal to both fans of the original video game and board game enthusiasts. I believe my work on this project showcases my ability to create engaging and entertaining game experiences that are both challenging and accessible.

  • Design of "immersive" boards reflecting the atmosphere of each environment in the Mario universe: Bowser Castle, Rainbow Road, Mushroom Kingdom
  • Balancing and management of the squares on the board with the addition of the Blue Lakitu allowing to know the position of a player using a ruler, facilitating the conception of Level Design

During his turn a player can play up to two Speed cardsfromhis hand. The values of these two cards added together indicate the number of spaces the player can move.

Movement is never interrupted and is limited only by the ability of the players to place the right cards at the right time. Thesecards have effects that apply during the player's move

CARDS

With his Speed cards, the player can move from square to square on the track. The player moves in a straight line, unless he plays a green card as described above.

Circuits are fully customizable, the tiles are all connectable allowing you to create your own course, more or less long, more or less dangerous.

There are several areas on the boardthatwillcreate interaction points for the players: Events and Boosters.

When players pass through an Item Box, they collect Item cards according to their position on the track. Items are divided into three packs, each of which yields more or less unique items.

Players can have up to 2 Items cards in their hand, and choose to change them each turn.

The entire graphic part was made by me after the game part was done. I designed this first graphic version for the editors presentation like : Ravensburger, Studio H, Catch Up Games...
