MY WORK

As the Team Manager, I was responsible for coordinating the work of the Artist and Developer teams. This involved creating detailed backlogs and plannings, and ensuring that everyone was on track with their tasks throughout the production process. I worked closely with the Artists to ensure that the characters and arenas were consistent with the overall game design and tone, and I collaborated with the Developers to make sure that the game mechanics were implemented correctly and in a timely manner.

As one of the Game Designer, I spent a lot of time balancing the game mechanics, making sure that the game was challenging but not impossible. I also worked on the creation of content, developing the characters, the arenas, the weapons, and the customization options.

One of the key features of Boat'Em Up was the navigation wheel, which allowed players to control the boat using an intuitive and responsive system. I spent a lot of time fine-tuning this system to ensure that it was easy to use but also provided enough depth to allow for advanced maneuvers and strategies.

In addition to the game design and Management, I also oversaw the scriptwriting for the game. Our goal was to create a fun and entertaining story that would keep players engaged and invested in the game world. We worked on developing a cast of characters with distinct personalities and backstories, and wrote dialogue that was mainly humorous. We also made sure to include a variety of interactions between the characters, including banter and jokes, to keep the game light-hearted and entertaining.

Overall, my role as Narrative Designer, Game Designer and Team Manager required me to wear many hats, from creative to technical to managerial. But by working closely with the rest of the team and keeping a clear vision of the game's goals and objectives, we were able to create an engaging and enjoyable game that players have loved to play.

  • Unity Engine proficiency: As Boat'Em Up was made on Unity Engine, I must have a deep understanding of the engine's capabilities and limitations.
  • Balancing different elements of the game, such as weapons, characters, and levels, to ensure that the game is challenging but not frustrating.
  • I've worked with the other Game Designers of the team to design new content, such as levels, characters, and weapons.
  • Communicate about intentions effectively to the rest of the team. Explaining the vision for the game and how different elements of the game will work together.
  • Game design document : Create and maintain a game design document that outlines the game's features, mechanics, and objectives.
  • Gameplay mechanics design: A game designer should be able to create fun and engaging gameplay mechanics that keep players interested and excited.
  • Participation on the core conception on the prototypes of new game mechanics, levels, and characters to test and iterate on.
  • Working on the Level Design to create the arenas of the game the enemies. Timing of the waves, intensity and creation of Intensity cruves for that.

  • Game Design

  • As the team manager, I would have been responsible for overseeing the entire project, from ideation to launch. This would have involved setting timelines and deadlines, delegating tasks to team members, and ensuring that the project stayed on track.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with team members, mainly with each lead, trying to simulate a true studio organisation
  • Providing strong leadership to the team, setting a positive example, and motivating team members to perform at their best, mostly before the project presentation. Keeping an eye on those who need the most motivation and support before juries
  • Communicate about intentions effectively to the rest of the team. Explaining the vision for the game and how different elements of the game will work together.
  • Developing a mobile game is a complex process, and there would have been numerous challenges and roadblocks along the way. As the team manager, I would have needed to be a skilled problem-solver, able to identify issues and find solutions quickly.
  • With multiple tasks and deadlines to manage, I would have needed to have strong time management skills, ensuring that the project was completed on time with backlogs and Milestones.
  • Be detail-oriented, ensuring that every aspect of the game met the high standards expected by our stakeholders and end-users.
  • While I may not have been directly involved in the programming or artistic aspects of the project, as the team manager, I tried to have a solid understanding of the technical aspects of game development, including Unity Engine and mobile game design.

MANAGEMENT SKILLS

  • As the narrative designer, I would have needed to have strong creative writing skills in order to develop the story and dialogue for the game's characters.
  • Creating fun and engaging characters such as Tina, Artemuse, Walrus, and Chicken Pirate would have required me to have a strong understanding of character design and development.
  • In order to create a compelling story, I would have needed to have strong world-building skills, developing the isles and the strange enemies with African masks that the player encounters throughout the game.
  • As the narrative designer, my primary responsibility would have been to tell a great story that kept players engaged and entertained. This would have required me to have strong storytelling skills, able to craft an engaging narrative that kept players wanting to progress through the game.
  • Working collaboratively with the game designers, artists, and programmers would have been a key aspect of my role, and I would have needed to ensure that the story and characters were integrated seamlessly into the gameplay.
  • Like any creative process, there would have been unexpected changes and challenges along the way. As the narrative designer, I would have needed to be adaptable and flexible, able to pivot and make changes as needed to ensure the success of the project.
  • Finally, as the narrative designer, I would have needed to be aware of the overall user experience and ensure that the story and characters were enhancing the player's experience rather than detracting from it. This would have required me to be able to put myself in the player's shoes and understand how the story and characters would impact their overall enjoyment of the game.
