THE PROJECT

    HEL: The Last Saga is a highly narrative campaign game, with paragraphs to read according to what the players accomplish. The game mechanisms mix exploration, tactical combat with resource management. Storytelling and background are ubiquitous and replayability comes from the unique way you have to replay a failed mission.

    The game tells the story of a Viking clan that leaves their village in search of their king who has been missing for several years. His people miss the respected king. His past glories that made the Peregrine clan rich are now only a whisper that the skalds sing in the Common House during feasts.

    Determined to find this king, a group of many heroes embark, each with their own secrets and ambitions. Tested by a devastating storm, only thriteen of them arrive on a dark island that seems to be the last place visited by the king...a great quest in the heart of hell then begins for these thirteen companions who will see their destinies change !

Gifta! Watch over the fleet of the brave, grant their clemency and support. It is with the liking of the winds and the rags of foam, that we floated on the tumultuous hair of the daughters of Aegir...

MY WORK

    Arriving on this project in the middle of its production, I had the chance to approach the management of the narrative and design experience within a team of 10 people in a disorganized studio, asking me to challenge myself as manager.

    Mainly in charge of the complete creation of 3 chapters of the game, representing more than 20 hours of scenario and gameplay, I had the chance to intervene as World Builder, Narrative Designer and Game Designer. I was able to work with the authors, briefing them on the scenarios we were building. I was also in charge of working on the Item Content, and on the side quests.

    Participate in the writing process by proofreading scripts, ensuring consistency in storytelling and proper writing of scenes.

    Coordinate with scriptwriters and designers to ensure that the renderings are consistent in terms of gameplay and feel. Writing of all narrative intentions about the narrative experience and creation of side quests for players leading to guess the final ennemy of the chapter.

  • Document and create stories that follow the artistic, creative and design visions.
  • Design narrative systems within the constraints of the gameplay and the constraints set by the Game Director and Narrative Director
  • Oversee all aspects of the chapter’s narrative process
  • Working closely with World Directors to adjust missions locations design in the game to fit with level design & narrative.
  • Develop clear guides and documents for the writing team and those who must work directly with them (primarily Art and Design)
  • Ensure the proper implementation and consistency of the game’s narrative elements throughout development.
  • Supervise and animate the team: Planning activities, monitoring, guiding them towards the creation of quality and efficient narrative designs etc...
  • Briefing the scenarists on the different narrative evolutions and rereading the chapters to ensure the overall coherence of the story
  • Participation in the game’s division as well as the intentions for each of the quests/levels.
  • Participation in the integration and realization of the story (main and secondary plots, setting, events, dialogues...).
  • Participation in Worldbuilding (Lore, History, background...)
  • Complete writing of the narrative intentions and creation of a flowchart in order to track down inconsistencies and to follow the player’s progress in “top view

FACT:

I designed the Chapter 7 from A to Z, starting with only some informations. I had to create ennemies, making researches, and writing the story progression of the characters.

AEGIR's WRATH

    Treacherous undines ! Who first guide us and whisper our praises, then lead us straight into the hands of the storm, which Aegir, father of the waters, manipulates with rage. We continued our journey, winding our way through rocks whose clouds hide the top. How not to lose even more of men and reason in front of these meanders labyrinthine meanders ?...

  • Document and create levels that follow artistic, creative and conceptual visions.
  • Present ideas to interdependent teams (conceptualize and communicate engaging gameplay experiences).
  • Design the level as an open world, giving rewards for exploration, allowing clues to the next adventure, but not essential.
  • Prototype 3 Chapters and gameplay elements. Ensuring the coherency with the game world logic & context, with the Main Missions narrative, with the themes to explore.
  • Layout and design of the environment space needed to progress in the game (placing terrain, non-player characters, bosses, encounters, events and more).
  • Write narrative and gameplay sequences for quests consistent with the chapter being told
  • Work closely with artists to enhance the aesthetic quality of the environments (terrain design, unique tile creation, and space design per chapter) and foster interactions in the game.
  • Work on mission design to ensure playability and consistency.
  • Design the 2 Boss Level in this chapter.
  • Create and track the Asset List needed to create the level. Listing of Level Design elements into two categories: Generic (common game elements) or Exotic (new elements)
  • Ensure consistency and follow up of the paragraphs planned by the narrative and their good timing of appearance during the exploration by the player
  • Develop the design taking into account the feedback from the testers.

THE LANDING

    Are we alone in the face of fate, guided by the tortured souls of our own brothers? It seems that we gave in too hastily to despair... Earth ! Earth straight ahead !
Where are our brothers who have gone without news for several solstices? The answer is here, right in front of us, and our fleet, defeated but victorious, will discover the mysteries that shroud the silence of our predecessors.

  • Communication, organisation, roadmaps, plannings, workflow, and motivation skills
  • Collaborate with the project's various Design, Art and Narrative teams to develop innovative missions/quests that fit into the overall vision of the game;
  • Cretion of weekly follow up to keeping and eye on the global production
  • Continuously evaluate the accessibility, understandability, and difficulty level of your designs
  • Participate in the development of tools and technologies to improve the narrative workflow
  • Supporting my team members on solving complex design, technical and implementation issues
  • Look out for improvements on workflows, tools pipelines etc. to live the idea of continuous improvement
  • Have a strong focus on UX/UI aspects of the design work and collaborate closely with the respective disciplines
  • Evaluate players feedbacks and improve features based on analysis
  • Define some chapters vision and quality standards for the game together with creative direction and other stakeholders
  • Creation a QA Testing Department and complete follow up of the Testing process and recruitment

I came on this project to support the team as designer and manager, creating reports, making backlogs, keeping an eye on the global experience during the development, even on the chapters I wasn't in charge of.
