MY THESIS

NARRATIVE THEME PARK

MY WORK

As a designer, my thesis focused on how to ensure that Disneyland Paris's shops don't pull out of the immersion. To achieve this, I conducted extensive research on live-action role-playing (LARP), immersive experiences, theme parks, and video games. My reflection focused on the concept of flow and how storytelling can enhance the overall experience.

After conducting thorough research, I proposed the design of a new Star Tour shop that would function as a duty-free area for galactic visitors. To illustrate my idea, I created plans and concept art that showcased how the shop would look and function within the overall Disneyland Paris theme park.

The design of the Star Tour shop emphasized a focus on immersive storytelling, with a focus on creating an environment that would make visitors feel as though they were truly in a galaxy far, far away. The layout of the shop was carefully designed to ensure a smooth flow of visitors, with themed areas and interactive exhibits that would enhance the overall experience.

Overall, my thesis demonstrated the importance of maintaining immersion in theme park environments, and the role that storytelling and flow play in creating a successful and engaging experience for visitors. The design of the Star Tour shop served as an example of how these concepts could be applied in a practical way to enhance the overall theme park experience.

DISNEYLAND SHOP

My end-of-master thesis (at RUBIKA) focused on the very notion of immersion on the biases that allow you to feel immersed in something. This reflection on our ability to feel immersed led me to fields such as video games and theme parks which are very much linked by their desire to make their audience travel and take their audience beyond reality.

During my research, I was able to realize that theme park shops were at the heart of a concern for immersion, creating a break in the flow for the visitor, and leading to frustration. In this thesis I meet professionals and park visitors and I try to propose the redesign of a store well known to Europeans "Star Tour Shop", based on this reflection: how to be sure that the shops of Disneyland Paris won't break our immersion ?

The storytelling and the way we will guide the visitor throughout his experience were at the heart of my reflection and my research. Looking in particular at the work of Celia Hodent, Jane Lessiter or Werner Wirth, all pioneers of the notion of Experience

Art by me

  • Design skills: I developed strong design skills as I reskinned the Star Tour store. This would involve designing the layout of the store, selecting the appropriate colors, materials, and textures to create an immersive environment, conducting to a concept art.
  • Planning skills: I developed planning skills as I calculated the flux in the store. This would involve analyzing customer traffic and creating a plan to optimize the flow of customers throughout the store. Making areas with the maximum of people the room can contain etc...
  • Character creation: I created characters for the theme park shop. This would involve designing the appearance and personality of the characters, as well as creating backstories for them. For exemple, I reused RX-24 as an old droïd selling strange artefacts and telling stories due to his age from the Star Tour creation.
  • Communication: As passionnate by the theme park industry, I made a lot of interviews from professionnals and it helped me a lot to gain confidence, to dare to contact and it allowed me to meet incredible people, and to gain in communication skills
  • Storytelling : Based on the work of the Imagineers, I was able to develop my ideas and build a real story and a real narrative context for the visitors, making this store a real spaceport where several stories are mixed.
